Decluttering a 5 Part Series – Part 5

By Anne-Marie Greenberg

In my almost 20 years as a Realtor, I’ve helped countless clients navigate the intricate process of moving homes. One of the most common challenges individuals face is decluttering spaces like the mudroom, garage, and basement. These areas tend to accumulate items over time, often becoming a chaotic mess. However, with the right approach, decluttering can not only streamline your move but also add value to your property. In this blog post, I’ll share some practical tips to help you tackle these spaces effectively.

1. Start with a Plan

Before diving into decluttering, take some time to develop a plan of action. Assess each space and identify items that are essential and those that can be discarded or donated. Set realistic goals and establish a timeline to keep yourself on track.

2. Divide and Conquer

Breaking down the decluttering process into smaller tasks can make it feel more manageable. Begin with one area at a time, such as the mudroom, and work your way through each space systematically. Sort items into categories such as keep, donate, sell, or discard.

3. Streamline the Mudroom

The mudroom is often the first and last space you encounter when entering or leaving your home. It’s essential to keep this area tidy and organized, especially during a move. Start by removing any unnecessary items such as old shoes, coats, or sports equipment. Install hooks, shelves, or baskets to maximize storage space and keep everyday essentials easily accessible.

4. Tackle the Garage

The garage tends to become a dumping ground for miscellaneous items, from tools and gardening supplies to holiday decorations and sporting goods. Take the time to sort through everything, disposing of broken or unused items and organizing the rest. Consider installing shelving units or wall-mounted storage systems to free up floor space and keep things organized. Make sure Buyers can see plenty of room for their cars in your garage!

5. Clear Out the Basement

Basements often house a wide range of items, from seasonal decor to old furniture and boxes of memorabilia. Begin by decluttering any items you no longer need or use, such as outdated electronics or furniture. Invest in storage solutions such as plastic bins, shelves, or overhead racks to make the most of the space and keep it clutter-free.

6. Donate or Sell Unwanted Items

Instead of throwing away items you no longer need, consider donating them to charity or selling them online or at a garage sale. Not only does this help declutter your home, but it also benefits others in need and can even put some extra cash in your pocket.

7. Stay Organized

Once you’ve decluttered and organized these spaces, make an effort to maintain them regularly. Implement systems such as labeling bins, scheduling regular cleanouts, and avoiding the temptation to accumulate unnecessary items.

Why Declutter Before Moving?

I hope you’ve enjoyed this comprehensive decluttering series. Remember decluttering before a move is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it makes the moving process much more manageable and efficient. With fewer items to pack, transport, and unpack, you’ll save time, money, and energy. Additionally, decluttering allows you to start fresh in your new home, free from the burden of unnecessary possessions.

Appeal to Potential Buyers

An organized and clutter-free home has significant appeal to potential buyers. It allows them to envision themselves living in the space more easily and highlights the home’s potential. A tidy and well-maintained property gives the impression of care and attention to detail, making it more attractive to prospective buyers.

By decluttering the mudroom, garage, and basement before your move, you’ll not only simplify the packing process but also present your home in its best light to potential buyers. A clutter-free home not only feels more spacious and inviting but also allows buyers to envision themselves living there more easily.
